Nick Diaz was famously suspended for elevated marijuana metabolites following his UFC 143 loss to Carlos Condit, and is facing a one year suspension as a repeat offender in Nevada. Anderson Silva Says He May Fight 10 More Years

Anderson Silva has seemingly decided to invade Randy Couture's territory.

At 37 years old, Silva has often been linked with retirement despite the fact that he's still the best fighter in the world and shows no real signs of slowing down. Age certainly isn't having much of an effect on him, and a win over Chael Sonnen this summer in Brazil will effectively clean out the middleweight division. Yes, again.

Rampage Jackson Wants the UFC to Cut Him

It hasn't been a good year for Quinton Jackson.

First he got injured while training to fight Ryan Bader at UFC 144 in Japan. That sucked, but a doctor that either works or doesn't work for the UFC—depending on which version of the story you listen to—told him that if he took testosterone replacement therapy, he would magically heal and be ready to fight Bader. Is Rampage Jackson Done with UFC?

Now what do we make of this?

In some recent tweets, Rampage Jackson has reportedly announced that his next fight in the UFC will be his last.

He tweeted, "I will fight who ever they put n front of me, I always have, but it will b my last fight n the UFC, I have other things on my mind."

Following up on this, "I didn't say I would b done fighting, I just said I'm not fighting 4 the UFC, (u fight cheap) I said I have other things on my mind (big head)."

Jackson had a lackluster and overweight showing in Japan where he lost a unanimous decision to Ryan Bader. This was especially disappointing after he seemed to pump himself up just to entertain his old Pride fan base.

Fighter Shatters His Knee: Viewer discretion is advised

While seeing Miesha Tate's elbow get nearly snapped in half by Ronda Rousey this past weekend was certainly not for the weak of heart, that actually may have not been the most disturbing MMA-related injury from Saturday evening.

As Fowler attempted to slam his opponent to the canvas, Jones awkwardly defended and had his right leg caught underneath him.

Three Main Card Bouts, Each with Major Title Implications Jan 28.

This is where the real fun begins. For those of you who weren’t all that satisfied with the UFC’s first foray onto network television in November, you will be hard-pressed to find anything to complain about when it comes to UFC on Fox 2: Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis.

Think of the Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos bout as the UFC and Fox giving fans a treat and an opportunity for them to used to one another. The excitement leading up to November 12 was crazy and the feeling in the Honda Center that night was completely electric.

No matter how big of a fan you were, you knew history was being made.

Now that the UFC and Fox have gotten their feet wet, they are set to explode with Evans vs. Davis next month. As of right now, there have been a total of 10 bouts announced. The top three will be televised on the Fox network, with the balance shown on Fox’s sister network, Fuel TV.

All three main card bouts have some sort of title implications. The night will not only offer some great matchups, but will hopefully clear up who will face the UFC’s light-heavyweight champion and middleweight champion. I say "hopefully" because, as we all have come to understand far too well, the fights that are supposed to answer questions can sometimes create more confusion.

Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis

In the main event, we have former UFC light-heavyweight champion Rashad Evans facing the undefeated, four-time Division I All-American from Penn State, “Mr. Wonderful” Phil Davis.

Evans has had his share of trials and tribulations over the past year. Those began with a knee injury that forced him to pull out of his UFC 128 contest with then light-heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

We all know what happened next: Suga’s Team Jackson teammate Jon Jones stepped in and defeated Rua pretty handily. Jones has gone on to defend the title on two occasions.

After defeating Rua and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, the UFC brought Evans into the cage to promote the bout between Evans and Jones. Injuries to both men put a halt to those contests.

Evans has since gone on to defeat Tito Ortiz at UFC 133 in August. With a win over Davis, he should be next in line to face Jones. But this is the UFC and nothing is ever that easy.

Strikeforce light-heavyweight champion Dan Henderson returned to the organization for the third time. With a stunning, and thrilling, victory over the aforementioned Rua, Henderson may have positioned himself for a shot at Jones and the UFC’s 205-lb title.

As far as Davis is concerned, a win over Evans would be very impressive. Would it be enough to catapult him straight into the No. 1 contenders’ slot? More than likely the answer would be no—unless Henderson is unable to slide into the spot opposite Jones, a man 17 years his junior.

Chael Sonnen vs. Mar Munoz

If that isn’t enough, the next two bouts could determine the next two challengers for the UFC’s middleweight championship title, currently held by Anderson “Spider” Silva.

Collegiate wrestler’s former No. 1 contender, and resident bad boy, Chael Sonnen will face off against the hard-hitting Mar Munoz. Sonnen took Silva to the limit at UFC 117 in August of 2010. He dominated Spider for 23 minutes before getting caught in the Hail Mary of triangle chokes with just 110 seconds left in the bout.

Sonnen was suspended for elevated testosterone levels. He returned at UFC 136 this past October and defeated the always tough Brian Stann via arm triangle in the second round. It was assumed he would face Silva in a rematch. Then Silva sustained an injury which will keep him out for some time. Sonnen chose to face Munoz, who has been on quite a tear himself.

"The Filipino Wrecking Machine" has won four straight. He beat Aaron Simpson, C.B. Dollaway, former middleweight title contender Demian Maia and Chris Leben. He is making a serious run at Silva’s title and a win over Sonnen will only strengthen his case. As he closes in on 34 years old, the time is now for Munoz. No one knows that more than he does.

Michael Bisping vs. Maia

Last, but certainly not least, we have everyone’s favorite British fighter Michael Bisping taking on Maia.

“The Count” recently completed his second tour of duty as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter. This time, his adversary was Jason “Mayhem” Miller. The pair met in the main event of The Ultimate Fighter finale on December 3. Bisping took it to Miller, earned a dominating third-round TKO and capturing his fourth win in a row.

As the face of British MMA, Bisping has become one of the most hated men in all of mixed martial arts. Most fans would love nothing more than to see Spider Silva batter and beat Bisping to a pulp. A win over Maia would position him right behind the winner of Sonnen-Munoz. If that man—whoever it should be—gets injured, then Bisping could step in and face Silva sometime this summer.

Maia is the least likely fighter to get another crack at Silva. The two met at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi back in April of last year. That was literally the straw that broke the camel's back (no pun intended) for UFC president Dana White. After watching Silva mock and embarrass Maia for five rounds, White gave the title to Silva’s manager Ed Soares and refused to wrap it around the champion’s waist, which has become customary since Zuffa took over the UFC.

It was very apparent that Maia was not on Silva’s level. I can’t imagine anyone clamoring to see the two of them meet inside the octagon any time soon.

Maia has gone 3-1 since that loss, with all four bouts going to the judge’s scorecards. He has seemingly lost the killer instinct that he brought with him to the UFC. That instinct helped earn him four Submission of the Night bonuses in his first five fights with the organization.

Nevertheless, an impressive win over Bisping—coupled with either Sonnen or Munoz wrestling away the middleweight championship from Silva—could put Maia once again on the precipice of a title shot. Maia and Munoz have met before, with Munoz winning by decision.

It’s a lot of what if’s and some highly unlikely scenarios. Maia will provide Bisping with a stiff test. Should Bisping be successful, there can be no debate on whether or not Bisping’s name should be included with the division’s top contenders.

All of this and we haven’t gone over the undercard—but that’s a different story for a different day. For now, sit back and think just how entertaining these three bouts will be. The best part of it all is that they will be televised on national television at no cost to the fans.

UFC 142: Injuries Haunt UFC's Return to Brazil

UFC 142 is the first card of 2012 that is forced to reorganize due to injuries.

Paulo Thiago was last seen fighting in Rio this summer at UFC 134. He received one of the best receptions that night from the Rio crowd. In fact, outside of Big Nog and Anderson Silva, Thiago was the most heavily supported fighter that night. The BOPE member was scheduled to face Mike Pyle but was forced off with an injury. No replacement has been found.

Stanislav Nedkov made his UFC debut at UFC 134 against Luis Cane. Nedkov hit Cane so hard he tried to do a flying kick into the fence. Stanislav was removed from the card with a visa issue. He was expected to face Fabio Maldonado. No replacement has been found.

The bad news didn't end there. MMA Fighting is reporting that Siyar Bahadurzada and Rob Broughton were also removed from the card due to injury. Bahadurzada was making his UFC debut against top welterweight prospect Erik Silva. No replacement has been found yet. Rob Broughton's injury allows Gabriel Gonzaga to return and face Edinaldo Oliveira, who is making his UFC debut.

Blame Canada: Brock Lesnar Charged Thrice on a Hunting Trip

One minute it’s an emergency NSAC meeting, and now this. Don’t worry folks, the charges facing former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will not affect his December 30th battle with Alistair Overeem at UFC 141, but Lesnar is now a fugitive in a country where sodomy is legal nonetheless. The charges aimed at Brock stem from a recent hunting trip he took to Alberta; I’ll let CJCYFM.com explain:

A recent hunting trip to Alberta has landed former WWE and Ultimate Fighting Champion Brock Lesnar in some trouble.

Fish and Wildlife officers confirmed the international celebrity has been charged with three counts in contravention to the Alberta Fish and Wildlife Act.  The charges came before Medicine Hat Provincial Court Thursday morning and include improper affixation of tags, spoilage of skin and edible flesh and possession of a controlled animal.

Neither Lesnar, nor his co-accused Chad Stryker, appeared in person in court.  Their matter has been put over until January 19th.

Phew. At first, the charges don’t sound that bad. That is, until you consider the fact that the controlled animal in question was a Garthok. And did you say Chad Stryker…with a y? Does Brock only befriend people with 1980′s action hero names like his own?

We here at CP have yet to learn the seriousness of these charges, but if Quinton Jackson can go on a literal rampage across Southern California and come away clean, then it’s hard to imagine Lesnar can be in any real trouble here. In fact, according to our Canadian law expert, the worst punishment Lesnar could face would be forced participation in the annual Burn’s Day supper, as is tradition.

But let’s get to the real story here; this is clearly a shallow attempt by our northerly neighbors to spoil our New Years festivities, likely because they blame us for GSP’s injury. And like it’s our fault that he trusts our surgeons more. All I’m saying is, the Baldwin brothers better watch their backs.

Vitor Belfort: Soccer is the passion of Brazil but UFC is taking over (Video)

"They said that soccer was the passion of our people but the UFC is taking over. I'm so glad to be a part of the past, the present and the future. And in the future, the UFC is going to be mainstream everywhere. Because UFC, Dana White, Lorenzo and the whole crew, bring the best, inside the Octagon and outside. We always care about the fans. We deliver the product. But also we love them, we share with them everything, the experience. ... This has become a style of life, UFC."

Count on Vitor Belfort to push the company line that even soccer isn't safe from the looming UFC takeover. That's because while it took nearly a decade for the world's largest fight promotion to head back to Brazil, the promotion has hit it hard, bringing multiple events in the span of a few months as well as the first international edition of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), featuring Belfort and Wanderlei Silva as coaches. Does anyone buy that MMA can be as big as soccer around the world? Anyone?

Fedor Emelianenko vs Satoshi Ishii fight video preview for New Year's Eve in DREAM

Fedor Emelianenko, who slammed the brakes on a three-fight losing streak with a unanimous decision victory over Jeff Monson last month in Moscow, Russia, will compete for the fourth time this calendar year by taking on Olympic Judo gold medalist Satoshi Ishii on DREAM's upcoming New Year's Eve fight card on Dec. 31, 2011, at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Can "The Last Emporer" finish his 2011 fight campaign at an even 2-2? Or will Ishii finish the Russian's storied career where it began, in "The Land of the Rising Sun?"

Lyoto Machida mulls Jon Jones rematch, contemplates drop to middleweight

After beginning his mixed martial arts (MMA) career with 16 straight wins and earning a reputation as "untouchable" due to his elusiveness and unorthodox style of fighting with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Lyoto Machida has now dropped three of his last four fights within the promotion.

Dropping consecutive fights to Mauricio Rua and Quinton Jackson, the former UFC light heavyweight champion was able to get back to his winning ways by sending Randy Couture into retirement with a "Karate Kid" inspired front kick at UFC 129 this past April.

His momentum quickly came to a halt, as he suffered a second round submission loss, which put him to sleep after refusing to tap, to UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones at UFC 140 this past weekend (Dec. 10, 2011) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Soon after giving "Bones" what many would call his toughest five minutes of competition during his tenure with the UFC in the first round, Jones was able to catch "The Dragon" in a standing guillotine, forcing referee Big John McCarthy to step in and stop the fight only after Machida was out cold.

After taking some time to reflect on his loss, Machida tells Fighters Only that even though he lost to Jones at UFC 140, he feels he may have found a path to get to the young champion and also mentions a possible shift in weight classes.

Star-divide

"Of course any loss is painful for a fighter. I lost but I still have three more fights at UFC and now my main goal is to be the champion of the weight class and bring the belt back to Para. Now it is a challenge to beat Jones and bounce back. We already know the path to get to him and in the next fight the things should happen with more ease. I wanted to thank the fans for the support. I know we gave our best and I know we did our best. We hired everybody we could but the result is not always the way we want. I think we always have to be learning something out of this and it is through the loss that we learn more than with the victory. I have been reading some messages on Twitter, on the Internet, and I only got to say thanks and say everything is okay with me, it's alright, let's go to the next one. I am a professional and it is part of my career: to win or to lose. I hope the next time we can celebrate together!"

After seeing better days early in his UFC career, the Shotokan Karate specialist seems to have come to a crossroads. With plenty of contenders lining up to be the first to dethrone the 205-pound division kingpin Jon Jones, it could be a while before Machida earns another title shot. Perhaps a change in weight class could rejuvenate the former champion:

"Now, I don't want to change - but if I am not the light heavyweight champion it really could happen."

A drop down to the 185-pound division could be an option, but his hopes to capture another UFC world title could prove rather testy, as everything begins and ends with current UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, who also happens to be one of Machida's training partners over at Team Black House.

Though "The Dragon" has competed as an undersized heavyweight at 225 pounds against B.J. Penn at a K-1 Heroes event in 2004; the heavyweights in the UFC are a whole different animal, tipping the scales of over 250-pounds and higher.

What do you say Maniacs, should "The Dragon" work his way back up the ladder of the 205-pound division and hope to earn a rematch against Jones, or whoever the champion may be at the time?

Or should the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt look for greener pastures in another division?

If so, where?

Ten Wild MMA Predictions for 2012

This time last year, I gave you a list of predictions that really created a stir. I boasted that the UFC would host an event in Mexico and be legalized in New York. Man, was I ever wrong about that. I apologize. But I also said that Dana White would coin a new phrase, land a network TV deal and that a famous athlete would cross over into the world of mixed martial arts. Not bad, eh? 2012 is quickly approaching so get the champagne on ice and let’s get to those wild predictions…

1. FOX will reprimand Dana White for his inevitable off-handed comments.

“Faggot“, “f*cking retarded”, “dumb bitch” — these are all things that have been uttered by the president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Dana White. The UFC may be MMA’s pinnacle and FOX’s diamond in the rough, but if the promotion is ever to secure a spot in the mainstream, it needs to display more control over its mouthpiece and his tongue. Advertisers tend to frown upon such public displays of hostility and bigotry. When Uncle Dana slips again and gives someone an earful, you can be certain that it won’t go unpunished as it has in the past. This goes for you too, Rogan and Rashad.

2. A champion will test positive for a banned substance.

This is not a repeat of 2002, 2003, or 2007. With nearly twenty champions total in the three largest MMA promotions, it’s not completely absurd to think that one of them has to be on something. I’d like to think that the warriors I pay money to watch fight are in such great shape and so shredded by drinking milk, taking their vitamins and doing lots of situps…but if I allowed myself to believe that I might as well believe that “you could punch a man 300 times, he hits you 11 times, wraps his legs around your head for eight seconds and they declare him the winner.” We shouldn’t point any fingers. (At least not yet, anyway.)

3. Brock Lesnar will retire from Mixed Martial Arts.

How many times can you tell the Grim Reaper “I’ll be ready when I’m damn good and ready”? No, Brett Rogers Gets 60 Days in Jail for Assaulting Wife; Will Only Serve 14″ href=”http://www.cagepotato.com/brett-rogers-gets-60-days-in-jail-for-assaulting-wife-will-only-serve-14/” target=”_blank”>not that one, but that might be a good fight. Problem: Brock Lesnar‘s body is suffering from a serious illness, he really doesn’t like to get punched in the face, and he HATES being away from home. Solution: Retire from MMA, have Vince McMahon pay you millions to star in the next direct-to-DVD WWE film conveniently filmed in Lesnar’s backyard and make an appearance every now and then. Sure sounds a heck of a lot better than training like this all the time.

4. Anderson Silva will vacate his title to tour the world with Justin Bieber.

Look, it’s easier for me to type that than it is to suggest the possibility of Anderson Silva losing in 2012. Silva isn’t expected to fight until sometime in the summer when half the year is in the books. Champions rarely defend their title more than once a year and with his projected timeline, Silva may only step foot in the cage once before the world comes to an end. Given the fighters who are currently “in the mix” and the probability of a fully healthy Spider losing to an American Gangster, a Count, or even a Filipino Wrecking Machine, I can say with certainty that the UFC middleweight champion will remain Anderson Silva ad infinitum.

5. Nick Diaz will buy a house.

Following another big payday against Carlos Condit, Diaz will take some time off and finally enroll in those “Buying a House” classes at the local community college. For his thesis project, he will purchase a modest bungalow in the good part of Stockton. After that, he’ll have even more reasons to complain about not being paid enough, including property taxes and lawn maintenance.

6. Scott Coker will join Pro Elite.

Regardless of how optimistic Scott Coker is about the negotiations between Strikeforce and Showtime, the writing has been on the wall for months — and it’s in Sharpie and everyone knows that if it’s written in Sharpie it’s forever. Zuffa will axe Coker and let Reed Harris take over the reigns. Coker’s good buddy Rich Chou is already part of the Pro Elite family, which is the perfect “foot in the door.” His knowledge of promoting live fights and experience in running a semi-major MMA promotion is an incredible asset to any operation looking to compete against the already established Bellator Fighting Championships and the well-oiled machine that is the UFC.

7. John Dodson will become the UFC’s inaugural flyweight champion, after defeating Kenny Florian by unanimous decision.

Sorry, Ken-Flo. Have you considered light-heavyweight?

8. Bruce Buffer will retire from his role as UFC announcer after winning big in the World Series of Poker.

Buffer is a smart guy. He started and sold his first business before most finish college. He’s the manager for the world famous boxing announcer Michael Buffer, who just so happens to be his brother. The Veteran Voice of the Octagon is preparing to launch a clothing line and an autobiography — a guaranteed New York Times #1 Best Seller. The avid poker player enjoys competing on the green felt battlefield, as he likes to put it. After suffering an ankle injury earlier this year, one would question how long he can keep doing what he does if he gets injured worse. Not to worry, if there’s one guy who doesn’t need the UFC to keep his head above water, it’s Bruce. Just take a look at how much he’s already made by playing cards.

9. Jon Fitch will finally get another title shot…just as soon as New York legalizes MMA.

This may be the most ambitious prediction yet. GSP will quite possible retire from MMA with his legacy unblemished after being sidelined for close to a year, opening the door for Dana White to grudgingly give Fitch another crack at the belt. As for New York dragging its feet in legalizing the fastest growing sport on the planet, recent news of NY Senators backing the bill that would allow MMA into the Big Apple is enough to make you think that this could be the year.

10. Ben Fowlkes and Chad Dundas quit writing to chase boyhood dream of becoming the world’s greatest tag team.

These two MMA writers have provided you with countless laughs here at CagePotato and continue to do so for a number of different web sites. Upon realizing their own mortality and not wanting to face public humiliation after losing to me on the MMA Hour’s 5 Rounds, the guys trade their laptops and audio recorders for spandex and face paint. This Brokeback duo will set out on a journey through the world of professional wrestling, aspiring to become more well know than the Road Warriors and more successful than the Dudley Boyz. Is it a long shot? You could say that, sure. But both of these men have a dream, dammit, a dream to wear WWE gold. We should all be so lucky to have the balls to chase our dreams, however crazy they may be.

Is Overeem a Legitimate Threat?

Building hype is always an important part of pushing a pay-per-view card for the UFC. Oftentimes, this hype can be more fantasy than reality. Whether it is saying that Chael Sonnen, Vitor Belfort and Yushin Okami are all fighters custom-built to take on Anderson Silva or that Dan Hardy had something resembling a chance to beat Georges St-Pierre, things can tend to get a little bit…wild.

Alistair Overeem is the latest recipient of more hype than he is due. He has been for a long while now, in fact.

As with many fighters, Overeem rose to fame through his days in the late Pride organization.  Competing in the promotion from 2002-2007, Overeem was a distinctly middle-of-the-pack 205-pounder, where he sported a solid 8-4 record before suffering three first-round losses in a row, dragging him down to 8-7 in his Pride career.

Looking deeper, however, you begin to notice a pattern. His losses came against Chuck Liddell, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (twice), Mauricio Rua (twice), Ricardo Arona and Fabricio Werdum. All tough fighters who, with the exception of Ricardo Arona, had (or still have) long, strong careers in MMA after Pride.

The list of people he beat is not nearly as star-studded. In fact, the only fighters of note who he beat in Pride are now-middleweight Vitor Belfort and Strikeforce heavyweight Sergei Kharitonov (who avenged that loss the next year).

After Pride dissolved, Overeem made his permanent move up to heavyweight. He started off by beating Michael Knaap in a K-1 fight and then lost the aforementioned Kharitonov rematch, getting KO’d in the first round.

UFC's Lesnar vs. Overeem Preview

Not even two full months later, he bounced back and absolutely embarrassed Paul Buentello in a title fight, making him the first (and to this point, only) Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion. However, that beatdown would be the closest thing to a fair fight for Overeem for a long while.

Except for a mega fight against Mirko Cro Cop (which ended in a No Contest because of some brutal knees to the groin), it can be said without much debate that Alistair Overeem was “fed” opponents.  Boxing-style. In fact, some of these bouts were so egregiously lopsided on-paper they likely would not have been approved by American Athletic Commissions.

At Dream 4, Overeem faced Lee Tae-Hyun when Tae-Hyun was just 1-1 in his MMA career. He had a pair of fights in the Netherlands against Gary Goodridge, who was three fights into what would become an eight-fight losing streak (his fight before Overeem was a loss to Paul Buentello) and Tony Sylvester (a fight that ended before it began, if possible).

From there, he had three fights in Japan that are, in this writer’s opinion, an embarrassment to the sport; he fought James Thompson (best known for having his misshapen ear punched flat by Kimbo Slice), Kazuyuki Fujita (best known for being the subject of one of the best articles on Cracked.com) and Todd Duffee (best known for his fastest-ever-in-the-UFC knockout of Tim Hague, but still a 25-year-old who had no business being in a fight with Overeem).

Even his two most recent wins in Strikeforce do not do much to bolster his resume. Brett Rogers was ejected from Strikeforce with a 2-3 record after being arrested for domestic violence, and recently lost his Titan Fighting Championships debut to UFC washout Eddie Sanchez.

Fabricio Werdum, meanwhile, is easily the best fighter Overeem has faced since his 2007 Pride loss to “Shogun” Rua. As somebody often ranked as a top 10 (and even a top five) heavyweight, however, he is also probably the most overrated fighter in the division. His performances against top competition are on par with Overeem (that is, not great), and his standup is basically what you would expect out of somebody labeled a “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist”.

So realistically, what can you expect out of Alistair Overeem now that he is going to be squaring off against the top heavyweights in the UFC? While Overeem has not seen many top mixed martial artists on the opposite end of the cage (or ring), he has an undeniably strong skill set that will, at the very least, keep him competitive in the division.

His success in K-1 speaks volumes about his striking skills, and he will have an edge over most of the fighters in the division standing up. His cardio is unknown at this point, but it passed a tough test against Fabricio Werdum earlier this year, with Overeem looking good for championship rounds after 15 minutes of being clinched and escaping takedowns.

His ground skills take a definite backseat to his standup, however. While he has enough veteran savvy to not be easily submitted, he is not going to be facing competition that he will be able to submit, either. He can effectively work the ground and pound, but the UFC’s heavyweight division is absolutely stacked with successful NCAA wrestlers and strong BJJ practitioners.

The biggest change for Overeem will be the size difference, or lack thereof. As any MMA fan knows, Alistair Overeem is an imposing individual with a hulking frame. He successfully uses this advantage in both MMA and kickboxing, bullying opponents into the cage (or ropes) to set up for his destructive knees, or using his bulk to keep opponents in position on the ground. This advantage, however, is going to be neutralized in the UFC, with loads of comparably huge individuals that he will not be able to impose his will on.

With Overeem set to face Brock Lesnar at UFC 141, we are likely to see a cross section of where Overeem is as a mixed martial artist. We know that Overeem can knee mid-level heavyweights into submission, but the question is, how he will handle a 265-pound Brock Lesnar charging him down? Objectively breaking it down, it remains to be seen how he will be able to handle the wrecking ball that is a Brock Lesnar takedown.

So, prediction time…who will win when Overeem and Lesnar face off? There are plenty of variables at work here, largely concerning how Lesnar has recovered from his long and difficult layoff since his UFC 121 loss to Cain Velasquez over a year ago.

Re-watching Brock Lesnar’s bout with Heath Herring is a strong reminder of what Lesnar is actually capable of. He is far, far faster than he should be at his size, and ultimately, the biggest factor is going to be whether or not he can use his speed and attack with the same sort of aggressive, driving takedowns we see from Josh Koscheck.

If he can get Overeem to the ground, he has the wrestling skills to keep the fight there, where he will have an enormous advantage. Even if Overeem spends his entire camp dedicated to defending the takedown, it is still unlikely that he is capable of avoiding many of those.

That said, this bout is nothing close to a sure-thing for Lesnar. As all MMA fans know, Lesnar is returning from a second battle with diverticulitis. He is reportedly fully recovered and has made several appearances looking as formidable as ever.

However, with over a year away from the sport, there is a huge question mark surrounding his strength, speed, and most importantly, his stamina. With Lesnar vs. Overeem slated for five rounds, we could see Lesnar’s cardio pushed harder than ever in his first fight back.

Ultimately, though, it has been a long, long while since Overeem has faced somebody that matches his sheer strength. At its core, this still ends up being a match between an explosive striker and an explosive wrestler. When that is what a fight boils down to, you have to bet on the wrestler.

10 Funny MMA-Related Videos

Here we have lightweight notables "JZ" Cavalcante and Kenny Florian engaging one another in a highly-intriguing battle that pits two word-class fighters against each other.

Though this gem took place midway through a fight, it's a memorable moment that should be recognized regardless.

The wily fighter in David Gardner took on the world-ranked lightweight submission ace in Shinya Aoki. The American proved to be formidable in the early goings of the bout, staving off several submission attempts, though, when Gardner greeted the attending crowd by saying, "Hello, Japan!" his fate would be later sealed.

There should be some moral conduct between fighters where there are at least some guidelines to be followed.

Don't whisper to a fighter, "Even though you're a man, I'm going to treat you like a lady." And definitely don't pull his jock strap mid-fight, because it will probably result in a rear-naked choke finish, which John Reedy demonstrates here perfectly against Rodney Rhoden.

Barring all prejudice to men who enjoy the comfort of men, nobody should be kissing you moments before a heavyweight collision is about to ensue.

In this memorable moment, Pride vet Heath Herring finished off opponent Yoshihiro "Kiss" Nakao well before their fight began, as the Japanese star planted a wet one on an unassuming Herring, who responded in kind with a short right hook to the jaw.

The video has 10 million-plus views and counting.

It stings a bit when a boxing legend the likes of Bernard Hopkins besmirches the sport of mixed martial arts, likening the UFC to "gay porn."

However, "B-Hop" would later be eating his words when he eventually ventured to the "dark side," praising the organization and MMA in general, even humbling himself enough to allow others to consider the boxing great as a "fan" of the sport.

Former UFC champion Bas Rutten is a man who has truly lived a long and colorful life.

Though he's a relatively easy-going, mild-mannered person, some years ago, Rutten was engaged in a 5-on-1 melee that took place in a bar in Sweden.

Speaking here with UFC commentator Joe Rogan on his podcast show, Rutten details the crazy circumstances surrounding the bar fight and later his time spent in a strange, strange prison.

In this very candid and intimate interview with Chael Sonnen, MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani speaks with the middleweight contender about some of his outlandish comments made about Brazil, which houses fighters such as rival Anderson Silva and the touted duo in Antonio Rodrigo and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

Sonnen leaves behind a memorable rant which later culminates with a tale of the Nogueira brothers' first foray into the States, where they allegedly mistook a bus for a horse.

His humor is all in good fun, but that doesn't mean it's any less awkward.

In this interview with a reporter from the Break.com, Jackson makes the most of his opportunity with the attractive young female by dry humping her into submission.

In March of 2007, Liddell was hoping to talk about the cool movie that is 300, as well as his upcoming battle with Renato Sobral at UFC 68, though, in his interview on Good Morning Texas, things didn't go exactly as planned.

The story differs depending on who you ask, but UFC President Dana White has stated that the "Iceman" suffered pneumonia the night before and took sedatives in large amounts, causing his slurred speech and drowsiness, which later resulted in Liddell literally falling asleep midway through the interview.

The title of the video is extremely misleading.

No, Chuck Liddell is not to be associated with cocaine or any other hardcore drug. His only affliction seems to be his innate ability to engage himself into fights.

I mean, the man REALLY likes his fights, as you can see here in this snippet of the former champ catching a glimpse of a live bout some years ago.

At WEC 52, Team Alpha Male in Urijah Faber, Joseph Benavidez and Chad Mendes all took to the cage. But just how does this juggernaut team handle the waning moments before the fight?

Forrest Griffin Only Got A Few Fights Left In Him. Open For Rubbermatch

Forrest Griffin was on MMA Fight Corner Radio this weekend and when asked whether or not he would entertain a third fight with Tito Ortiz, the former UFC light heavyweight champ didn’t hesitate in answering.

“If people would pay to see that fight, I’ll get paid to fight that fight,” Griffin said. “I care more about where the fight is; I don’t travel well. If that fight [with Tito] happens in the continental United States, I’m down.”

The TUF 1 winner, who suffered a knockout loss to Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in his last bout in August at UFC 134 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, also laid out his career plans moving forward and revealed that he doesn’t plan on following in the footsteps of his mentor, Randy Couture.

“If anything, for me now, I’m realizing that I don’t have much left. This is the end of the road for me. I want a couple of more fight fights, you know, good ones. Fights were I don’t get knocked out in the first round,” he said with a chuckle. “Fights were I get hurt and bleed a little but I kinda rally back. Something of that nature. As far as a fight with Tito, yeah it would be good but do people want to see it.”

How Dana White Can Make MMA the Biggest Sport in the World by 2020

As a rabid fan of MMA, do you ever just stop and say, “wow, how’d we get this far?” I do a lot, and it's all still very surreal to me. Just about everywhere I look I see someone sporting a Tapout shirt. With the UFC starting to show fights on Fox, dare I say this sport has finally gone mainstream?

WOW: Crazy Video Of 20 second Capoeira MMA Knock

And here we have Marcus ‘Lelo’ Aurelio scissor-kicking Jose Cornejo’s head in mid-air like he was trying to score the winning goal for Brazil. The stoppage came just 43 seconds into their meeting at Saturday’s Battlefield Fight League event in Vernon, British Columbia, Canada. Fun fact: Lelo is the very same dude who pulled off that insane capoeira kick knockout against Keegan Marshall in 2009. Good lord, get this guy on TUF already.

Capoeira (Portuguese pronunciation: [kapuˈejɾɐ]) is a Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, sports, and music. It was created in Brazil mainly by descendants of African slaves with Brazilian native influences, probably beginning in the 16th century. It is known by quick and complex moves, using mainly power kicks and quick leg sweeps, with some ground and aerial acrobatics, knee strikes, take-downs, elbow strikes, punches and headbutts.

The word capoeira probably comes from Tupi, referring to the areas of low vegetation in the Brazilian interior.

Video: Mark Munoz: I don't think Chael Sonnen is going to talk trash for this fight at UFC on FOX 2

For the second fight in a row, middleweight motor mouth Chael Sonnen isn't likely to cause a ruckus with his upcoming opponent, Mark Munoz, who he'll take on at UFC on Fox 2 on Jan. 28, 2012, in Chicago.

Stupid' Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera had Frank Mir beat at UFC 140, admits 'big' mistake going for submission

Damn you, Pride (FC)!

After delivering a flush right hand to the back of Frank Mir's ear at UFC 140 this past weekend (Dec. 10, 2011) that had the former champion dancing a delirious ditty, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira inexplicably looked to secure a submission instead of continuing his onslaught of punches.

Georges St. Pierre Undergoes Successful Knee Surgery

The first step in the process for Georges St. Pierre to return to the octagon was apparently successful. The UFC welterweight champion had been scheduled to have undergo knee surgery sometime this week, and it ended up going down today. Afterwards, he tweeted that everything went well:

He also included a picture of himself with the doctor that performed the surgery. St. Pierre was expected to defend his UFC welterweight title at UFC 143, but suffered a partial tear of the meniscus and a full tear of the ACL in his right knee. The initial prognosis by UFC president Dana White was that GSP would be out 10 months, but GSP himself has said that 6-9 months is more realistic. Nick Diaz will now face Carlos Condit for an interim UFC welterweight title at UFC 143.

Video: ‘Uncle Creepy’ Is One of the Most Appropriate Nicknames in MMA History

Ian “Uncle Creepy” McCall made a recent appearance on Inside MMA to discuss the UFC’s addition of flyweights, and Jesus Christ, would you look at that guy. It’s like him and her had a baby. The long-haired surfer vibe that Ian used to rock in his WEC days is gone, replaced by a gentleman who looks like he might drive a surprise van in his spare time. Are the UFC’s fans ready for such mustachioed intensity?

I’ll give McCall credit, though: He’s a good talker, and every division needs at least one. After warping our minds with a statement like “I’m the greatest flyweight of all time, for the past year,” he follows it up with the more straightforward “I need my weight class, it’s mine, give it to me, because I’m gonna beat up everybody.” Demetrious Johnson responds in humble fashion, which is no way to get attention.

Jose Aldo Hopes to Sell Out a Soccer Stadium and Other UFC 142

UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo appeared in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday, where he'll defend his title against Chad Mendes at UFC 142 next month.

That fight will take place at the HSBC Arena, where the UFC played before a capacity crowd in August. But Aldo is hoping to fight in a much bigger Brazilian venue in the future.

"I hope one day to be able to fight in a football stadium," Aldo said.

That opportunity may come soon: UFC President Dana White said that while he's in Brazil this week he'll be looking at stadiums, and there are indications that ticket demand remains very strong in Brazil. One Brazilian reporter pressed White on Tuesday about why so many fans were left disappointed in August when they couldn't get tickets. (White's advice: Get online immediately tickets go on sale Wednesday.)

Aldo, who will be fighting back home in Brazil for the first time since he signed with Zuffa in 2008, said there will be some distractions associated with having family and friends around, but he said that won't make a difference come fight time.

"I have to put all that out of my mind," Aldo said.

Some other notes on the UFC 142 press conference.

Mendes thinks he has one key advantage in preparing for Aldo: He trains every day with Urijah Faber, who has faced Aldo before. "Having a teammate in Urijah Faber who's already fought Jose is an advantage for me," Mendes said. "We were able to sit down and put together a great game plan for this camp based on that. Urijah trains with me every day."

Don't get your hopes up for Anderson Silva vs. Jon Jones: White has said he views Silva and Jones as the two best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, but when a Brazilian reporter asked if that meant the two of them would fight each other, White said he doesn't see either man taking on an opponent outside his own weight class any time soon. "Jon Jones has a couple of obligations. He has to fight the winner of Rashad Evans and Phil Davis," White said. "Anderson Silva has been very reluctant to move up to 205 pounds. We'll see. We always try to make the fights that people want to see. If people want it, we'll try to make it."

Anthony Johnson isn't expecting to go back down to welterweight: Johnson, who is moving up to middleweight to face Vitor Belfort in the co-main event at UFC 142, said he's putting all his focus on his new weight class. "Right now 170 isn't in my mind at all," Johnson said. "My mission is to conquer 185."

Belfort thinks MMA can be bigger than soccer: "I remember when Dana White said UFC was going to become the No. 1 sport in the world," Belfort said. "He wasn't crazy when he said that."

Brazilian fans want to see some non-Brazilian stars: Multiple members of the Brazilian media questioned White about why none of the promotion's top North American stars are on this card. White said he has a lot of Brazilian fighters on the UFC roster who requested to fight in Brazil, and that didn't leave much room for non-Brazilian fighters. "This is our second fight here and you have people who it's always been their dream to fight here," White said. "But yes, we will bring in talent from around the world. Georgest St. Pierre or whoever else it might be. We do realize people here want to see them too."

On Friday, December 30, the UFC will have arguably its biggest event of the year, as former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will face off against former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem.

This will be Lesnar's first time stepping in the cage since October of 2010 when he lost his heavyweight title to Cain Velasquez.

This will also be Overeem's first time stepping in the UFC cage ever.

Even though neither fighter has seen the UFC cage in quite some time, UFC 141 will be the biggest pay-per-view draw of the year.
